How the Dog Fence Works To Keep Your Pet Safe
A small transmitter box is installed somewhere on your property, this needs to be in the dry and plugged into a standard electrical socket (the fence does not pass any electricity through the boundary wire but the transmitter requires a small amount of power to run the system - average running cost 5 - 8p per day). We usually recommend that the box is installed in garage, utility room, tack room etc.
A heavy duty boundary wire is laid around the perimeter of your property and runs back to the transmitter box. If we are installing for the customer this is generally buried using our burial equipment. The wire carries a safe encoded radio signal which uses our patented FM technology. The signal can easily be adjusted to make the invisible zone larger or smaller (from as little as 2ft to 16ft). The radio signal is usually zeroed from the point at which the wires leave the transmitter box to the boundary and the signal is only "live" around the perimeter or the designated area. The pet wears a small receiver collar which is coded to only react to our FM signal. When the pet enters the avoidance zone the collar picks up the radio signal and gives the pet a high pitched “beep” to alert the dog or cat. If the pet continues further the collar emits a low static shock (correction). All our collars have flexible training levels and can be set to audible only and each dog or cat will have their own correction level tailored to their personality. DogFence systems are the ONLY system worldwide to give a 100% no false activation guarantee due to the patented FM signal. The FM signal does not use OOK (on off keying) and gives total protection around the boundary - see Why Choose FM?.

Through a simple training process, using audible and visual aids, your pet learns to identify and stay within his boundaries (cat training is slightly different using the patent pending training protocol). The pet learns to respond to an audible signal (a beep that comes from his collar). If he continues to go beyond the audible signal, he receives a
mild correction transmitted through the receiver collar. To aid your pet the new boundary is marked with temporary training flags. All pets learn easily and quickly to respond the audible warning signal rather than the correction. There is no maintenance required for the system simply a battery change in the receiver collar every 6 months or 2 years depending on the receiver type.
From a gateway only, town garden or up to 350 acres. You can choose to give your pet access to your entire boundary or a smaller designated area and unlike more costly wooden or chain link dog fences, your pet can't jump over, dig under or chew through a DogWatch hidden fence.
In addition to being less expensive than traditional fencing, an underground fence safeguards your landscaping rather than hiding it. It is the sensible solution for protecting both your pet and your property.
DogFence can recommend and install a system that is right for your property. We have installed systems in all kinds of terrain – including hilly or cliff areas, woodland, farms, across streams and city properties. Whatever it takes – we work so dogs can play!
Standard Dog Fence Layout

For some installations it may be necessary to install a “there and back” cable. This type of installation is typically seen in semi-detached or terraced house (although there are ways around this) or single boundaries and gateway only installation. The single boundary option or banana loop illustrates this type of installation.

What is a DogWatch pet containment fence?
The DogWatch Hidden Fence is a dog and cat fence pet fencing system that uses an electronic radio signal to keep your pet WITHIN a designated containment area, such as a garden; or OUT of an area, such as a swimming pool, patio, or veg patch. Our pet containment fences also work in the interior of your home to keep your pet off a sofa or away from a kitchen worktop or out of rooms.
How does it work?
A hidden wire, buried underground, carries the harmless low-level radio signal around the containment area. Your dog wears a receiver on a collar that emits a mild stimulation, or correction, when he gets too close to the designated area. With an indoor dog containment fence, the hidden wire runs around your couch or other containment area and is not visible to the eye.
Will the pet fencing system work for more than one pet?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of pets our hidden pet fencing can protect at one time. Each pet will need his or her own receiver collar, and new animals must be trained.
What if I move?
Once you purchase the DogWatch Hidden Fence System, you may expand it or take it with you when you move. Your pet will require re-training to the new boundary – the great thing is the warranty travels with you (even overseas).
Is my garden too small / too big for a hidden fence?
Our systems have been successfully installed on properties ranging from small urban gardens to large country estates. The system is very customizable to meet your unique needs.
How big an area will the system cover? What kinds of areas will it cover?
DogWatch fences offers models that can cover properties with up to 350 acres. You can contain your pet in or out of most anywhere, including interior features of your home such as stair cases, dining rooms, and work tops.
How old does my dog have to be to be ready for a pet containment system?
As a general guideline, your pet should be at least 4 months old. However, some dogs may mature earlier than others because of breed, size or disposition. If your pet can follow the three basic commands of come, sit, and stay; they may be ready for a DogWatch brand pet containment system.
Will a system work with any pet?
Our systems work with cats and dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes. However, this type of product is not intended for use with animals that have a history of aggressive behaviour.
Will the stimulation from the collar hurt my pet?
Absolutely not! The type of stimulation used by the hidden fence system has been used in dog training for over 40 years, and has stood the test of time as a safe and effective means of behaviour correction. All hidden pet fence systems emit a correction that is less than 25% of the energy found in a static electricity shock that most people have experienced. The amount of correction can be adjusted so that a dog receives the appropriate level of stimulation for its size. Our products are used and recommended by veterinarians.
Can my dog get out of the containment area?
With proper training, this will rarely happen. We pride ourselves on our 100% success rate on our installed systems and furthermore offer a containment guarantee on all DogWatch Systems installed by DogFence (Conditions apply: collar must be correctly fitted at all times and the receiver battery must be operational).
DogFence are the only authorized UK dealer of DogWatch hidden systems. These systems are safe for your dog or cat and they are effective at keeping your pet safe. Veterinarians, pet professionals and pet trainers all over the world own and recommend DogWatch Hidden Fence systems.
